Through the Cracks

We are human. We can only do so much.

Sometimes, things slip through the cracks.

But what happens when those things are lives?

We found out today that a child was killed. We fought long and hard against this child being returned to this situation, but we lost.

Cracks can be valleys. I just hope that, in my time doing this work, I can build a wider, safer bridge.

Many years ago, my father was a first year attorney with Children's Services. He argued repeatedly that a little girl needed to be permanently removed from her father's care.

On the night she was last returned to him, he kicked her down the stairs and killed her.

My father left his position with Children's Services 18 months later, but, he still has a photo of that child, taped inside one of his desk drawers. It is more than 25 years old.

I don't think you ever get over a thing like that.
